Key West Bar Stroll Get Your Passport And You Can Follow In The Footsteps Of Hemingway


A Key West bar stroll will bring you into contact with sunny places for shady characters. Green Parrot, Salute, Island Dogs Bar, Captain Tony's Saloon, Sloppy Joes, Kelly's Caribbean Bar Grill. These are just a few of the colourful names waiting to greet you and encourage you sit, chat while the world slowly drifts by.

The main centre of town is enclosed between Truman Ave (in the south), Whitehead Street, Eaton Street (in the north) and White Street (in the east). Most bars will be along or within these streets. Others are all generally close by along the harbor, quays or other waterfront areas and within easy walking distance.

Truman Avenue is as good a place to start as any. It honors President Harry Truman, the 33rd US president. Starting from 1946, after World War II had ended, Truman spent his winters in a balmy climate. The place he stayed was a gracious white building on the grounds of the naval base. That building became known as the little White House. This historic structure has been standing since 1890.

Sloppy Joes is on Duval Street, around the corner from the little White House. The Shipwreck Museum is also nearby. Sloppy Joes been operating since 1937 and is considered one of the great historic bars in the USA. It offers huge cocktails, great food, boutique beers and all the big games on satellite TV. Live entertainment starts at noon. Its patrons like to sit and linger. It stays open till four in the morning.

Around the corner from Sloppy Joes, on Whitehead and Southard, stands another historic institution, the Green Parrot. It began life in 1890 as a grocery store but quickly developed into a music joint for Caribbean migrants that had drifted into the Keys. After the Second World War ended and navy sailors had more time to relax, the grocery store morphed into the Brown Derby Bar.
