Cape Town Safari Adventure

A diverse and abundance of indigenous fauna and flora is what makes Cape Town such an attractive area to visit for a safari. Some game reserves are further afield but a number of them are surprisingly near the city.

Three hours outside Cape Town is one such game park named Sanbona Wildlife reserve. It is situated in the middle of the Karoo desert once home to the San people. The park is also unique in that it is reintroducing the white lion back into the wild.

Game parks offer visitors loads of fun things to do. Guests may lie back and enjoy the extravagance associated with most game parks or they can go out with a game ranger on a guided safari to see the animals in their natural surroundings. Parks in South Africa are fortunate to have the 'big five' present on their reserves, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant.

If arranged in advance, it is possible to embark on a day trip to a game park spending just a few hours on safari. Situated only a short two hour drive from Cape Town is one such park named Aquila where guests can enjoy a day safari. Tourists can be back in their hotel rooms in opulence before the sun sets, making it hard to believe that just a few hours earlier they were on safari.

Safaris take place under the guidance of well trained and qualified game rangers. These skilled and learned professionals are licensed by the National Parks Board with detailed understanding of the animals and plants they come into contact with. They possess knowledge of all the safety and security procedures should guests be faced with threatening situations.

Children of a certain age are not permitted on safaris. Game parks are not like zoos where animals are limited to their confined spaces; here they are free to roam and do as they please which makes them unsafe. With this in mind, most if not all game parks take this into consideration and provide facilities for children while parents are out on safari.

There are many other species to see apart from the 'big five'. There are Springbok, Oryx, Eland and wildebeest which fall into the buck categories. Other animals which can be viewed include hyena, cheetah, zebra and giraffe. A Cape Town safari is truly a life changing event for any visitor.
