The Indian Sub-Continent is a firm favorite with backpackers because there's plenty to see and do, and travelling around is cheap. In the six months that most tourist visas allow you can backpack intensely, yet still feel as though you missed out on so much. There are tropical beaches, there Hindu temples, Rajasthani palaces and forts, there are beautiful Himalayan valleys, breathtaking mountain views and holy cities
Even though prices are steadily increasing and the tourism trade there is aimed more and more in favor of the domestic middle class, it's possible to find accommodation on the beach for around 100 Rupees a night. Food is also very affordable and it's possible to eat out whilst in India for a few Dollars per day, particularly if you eat with the local people. However, Prices increase at restaurants that cater for foreigners and non-Indian food is always more costly than Indian food.
India is used to backpackers and although travelling around takes time, it is easy enough to travel around. It's relatively safe too, so long as you exercise common sense and don't look for trouble. Most backpackers there travel along routes that have been used by thousands and thousands of other travelers before them, and as a result you'll come across lots of services geared especially towards the backpacker market.
Locally run travel agents are readily available on backpacker travelling routes and can be used for arranging day trips, visas and flights. Sleeper trains and overnight buses are ideal for budget conscious travelers and provide an inexpensive method of covering moderate distances. Further distances can be overcome by using domestic airlines, which are mostly low-cost, dependable and are bookable at short notice.
